Research Interests

I study comparative political and economic development. That is, my work explores the catalysts and conditions for a nation's institutional transitions in its politics, state, and economy. Formal theory and historical case studies in tandem form the principal method of my research. I am particularly interested in Britain in the seventeenth century, the United States from the 1790s to the 1850s, and Korea from the 1950s to the 1980s.
